We need the Board of Independent Medical Examiners in Korea
Lee Kyoung-Seok

Abstract
There are increasing numbers of medical malpractice claims. It is not easy to demonstrate or clarify any causal relationship between the unwanted results and a certain medical treatment. Only a medical doctor can examine the medical malpractice. The court has requested the expert witness to the Korean Medical Association. Frequently, it took a long time. Moreover the medical reports were not always enough to be trusted by the claimers. Recently, there is a few doctors to deal the malpractice suit as a main job. However, they did not receive any systematic educations or a formal verification.

In the United States of America, there is a quality assurance organization incorporated to establish national, uniform standards of competency for doctors performing independent medical and disability examinations, the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. It credentialed doctors that they possess the knowledge, skills, experience, and abilities required for the attainment of their certification. Independent medical examinations and disability evaluations are important components of increasing medical malpractice suits, reparations of non-life insurance companies, compensations of industrial or life insurance companies and review in the health insurance review agency.

To provide a reliable doctors performing independent medical and disability examinations, it is necessary to make a new Board of Independent Medical Examiners in Korea.
